This is my last Electronic Edition for some time. Starting next week my wife
and I are taking our 6 month old son Daniel for a half year tour of
California, to show him off to family and friends. For the next six months
the compiling of the bulletins will be in the capable hands of Ingemar
Sandberg and Bengt Dalhammar and the editing of the Electronic Edition will
be in the enthusiastic (if novice) hands of Susan Beard.

CompuServe and FIDO addresses will NOT be a good way to reach Sweden Calling
DXers during this period. Use instead fax, telex, or (if necessary) the post.
I'll be attending the Dayton Hamvention in April, so I may meet some of you

SATELLITE--The upcoming launch of a West European Ariane rocket has been
delayed until January 21st. The rocket will carry SPOT-2, the follow up to
the French-Swedish photo observation satellite SPOT. It will also carry six
amateur radio "microsats". These satellites will be cubes measuring only 23
cm on a side, and weighing 7.5 kg each.
Bramsat, from Brazil, also called Dove, will carry a computer voice
synthesized beacon, with a message of good will and international
understanding, on 145.980 or 145.973 MHz.
Lusat from Argentina and Pacsat from the United States will carry packet
radio computer bulletin boards. Lusat will have a downlink on 437.150 MHz,
Pacsat on 437.050 MHz.
The fourth microsat is Webersat or Nusat, built at Weber State College in
Utah in the United States. It will carry video and packet radio equipment,
with a downlink on 437.100 MHz.
There are also two microsats from the University of Surrey, in Britain, which
has built two currently orbiting satellites. (George Wood)
COMPUTER--Havana Moon is the pseudonym of a well-known writer about
clandestine transmissions, especially the numbers signals often used to
communicate with spies. Now he or she has developed a computer service called
Los Numeros On-Line. It's like a computer bulletin board, but it's included
as a conference within a system called Portal, headquartered in Cupertino,
California.
Users have access to a number of international computer networks, such as
Arpa, Bitnet, and Usenet. The system includes columns by some well-known
clandestine broadcast experts, newsletters such as Sweden Calling DXers,
program schedules from major international broadcasters, forums for special
interest groups, and a database of downloadable software for Commodore, IBM,
and Macintosh users.
It's hard to say if this system is an improvement over some that already
exist, such as CompuServe, the ANARC BBS, and the SWL Echo on the Fidonet
system. But it might be worth a try. For more information, write to MoonBeam

Also in the online world, the international Usenet has formed a newsgroup for
shortwave listeners. If you have access to Usenet, look for
rec.radio.shortwave.
Turning to computer control of receivers, AF Systems, which developed the
Seeker interface for the Commodore 64, has a new Seeker PC program. This
works with the Kenwood R-5000 receiver, but an Icom R-71 version is on the
way. The system is impressive--with a database to manage receiver memory
channels, direct keyboard entry of frequencies, mouse support, and automated
unattended control.
Seeker is expensive--the complete system including interface costs just under
500 dollars. And there's always a problem with computers generating

On a much smaller scale, Elektrokonsult in Norway has developed a nice
international broadcast datebase program for IBM compatibles. Formore

SWEDEN--The new budget presented last week by the Swedish government has some
good news for Radio Sweden and our listeners. Some 9 million dollars has been
allocated for three new shortwave transmitters, to replace those in Hoerby
and Karlsborg. The current 17 year old transmitters have to be phased out by
the end of 1994, due to the PCB used in their construction. The new
transmitters will include SSB, which is supposed to be the mode used for
international broadcasting after the turn-of-the-century. The new budget also
makes permanent Radio Sweden's broadcasts in Latvian and Estonian. (George

BHUTAN--The Bhutan Broadcasting Service in Thimpu is now operating on a
new frequency. The station is scheduled to broadcast weekdays 11:00-
15:00 hours, with English 14:15-15:00 hours, and on Sundays 06:00-10:00
hours, with English 09:00-10:00 hours, all on the new frequency of 5023

BRAZIL--Radio Sentinela da Amazonia in Obidos, Para has been heard with
good signals around 00:30 hours on 3285 kHz. (Ari Inkinen, Finland)
Already heard at the end of November in Sweden around 01:45 hours on

A number of other Brazilian stations have recently been noted in
Sweden. Radio Guaiba is often heard around 07:10 hours on 6000 kHz.
Radio Excelsior was heard at 21:50 hours on 9585 kHz and Radio Marumby
signed off at 22:25 hours on 9665 kHz. Radio Araguiania was heard at
23:40 hours on the odd frequency of 11833 kHz and Radio Universo could
be heard until sign off at 22:30 hours on 11905 kHz. Radio MEC is
apparently reactivated and has been observed around 22:00 hours on
11950 kHz. (ShortWave Bulletin)
CAMEROON--Radio Douala was found on December 27th at 05:10 hours to be
operating on 4975 Khz instead of 4795 kHz. When checked at 04:30 hours
on the following day, the opening announcements in English and French
continued to refer to 4795 kHz as well as 1106 kHz, although Radio
Douala was again operating on 4975 kHz. (BBC Monitoring)
Radio Bafoussam has recently been noted around 18:00 hours on 4000

COSTA RICA--Radio Reloj has been reactivated during the last weeks and
was frequently heard around 07:00 hours on 4832 kHz, in parallel with
6006 kHz. (ShortWave Bulletin)
CZECHOSLOVAKIA--Updating SCDX-2074, the National Radio channel Hvezda
has been renamed Ceskoslovensko and also has a new interval signal. The
Slovak opposition will broadcast its own program over Radio Bratislava
on weekdays 16:05-17:15 hours. (Lubomir Stejskal, Karel Honzik, Jiri

ETHIOPIA--The Voice of Ethiopia can be heard with a programme in
English to Europe 18:00-18:30 hours, which is repeated 18:30-19:00
hours, on 9660 kHz with good strength. (Uwe Gruner, West Germany)
FINLAND--There is a new afternoon transmission in German from Radio
Finland, daily 16:30-16:55 hours on 6120 and 11755 kHz. The late
evening quarter hour service in German at 21:45 hours will be dropped
and replaced with a programme in Swedish. Helsinki can now be heard in
German at 06:25, 11:00, 16:30, 20:00 and 22:30 hours. (Juhani Niinistoe,

MADEIRA--The following observations were made during a holiday trip to
Madeira. Centro Radional RDP/Madeira operates 24 hours a day with Canal
1 on mediumwave 531, 603 and 1332 kHz and with Super FM on 94.1, 93.3,
96.5 and 89.8 MHz. The latter is Funchal which earlier was listed on
96.0 MHz. Posto Emissor de Radiodifusao do Funchal can be heard 06:00-
24:00 hours, Sundays to 01:00 hours, on 1530 kHz and 08:00-24:00 hours
on 92.0 MHz.
Estacao Radio da Madeira is on the air 06:00-01:00 hours, Sundays
to 02:00 hours, on 1485 kHz. The Radio Turista programme can be heard
Mondays to Saturdays 08:30-09:00 hours in Danish/Norwegian/Swedish,
09:00-09:30 hours in German, 17:45-18:30 hours in English and 18:30-
19:00 hours in French, all on 1485 kHz. There is also an FM programme
daily 07:00-24:00 hours, Sundays to 02:00 hours, on 96.0 MHz.
There are also three FM stations not listed in the World Radio TV
Handbook: Radio Jornal da Madeira on 88.8 MHz, Radio Clube on 106.8 MHz
and finally Radio Geral on 98.8 MHz. (Anker Petersen, Denmark)
MALTA--The Voice of the Mediterranean broadcasts daily in English
06:00-07:00 hours on 1557 and 9765 kHz and 14:00-15:00 hours on ll925
kHz, and in Arabic 07:00-08:00 hours on 1557 and 9765 kHz, and 15:00-
16:00 hours on 11925 kHz. The address of the Voice of the Mediterranean
is announced as Box 143, Valletta, Malta.
Radio Mediterranean uses the transmitters of the Deutsche Welle
relay station in Malta and can be heard daily 18:00-19:00 hours in
Arabic, 21:30-22:30 hours in French and 22:30-23:30 hours in English,
all on 1557 and 6110 kHz. The address of Radio Mediterranean is Box 2,

IBRA Radio has been observed with a transmission in English at
15:00 to South Asia on 11865 kHz. (Alnurchemetaz Igoz, USSR)
ROMANIA--Radio Bucharest can be heard in English to Europe at 13:00
hours on 11940, 15365, 17850 and 21655 kHz; at 19:30 hours on 6105,
7125, 7195 and 9690 kHz; and finally at 21:00 hours on 6105, 7105, 7195

THAILAND--Radio Thailand has been noted in English from 23:00 hours
onwards on 9655 kHz. (Wilfried Schwarzhoff, West Germany)
UNITED STATES--KGEI, the Voice of Friendship in San Francisco has been
heard with a religious programme in Russian until sign off at 05:30
hours on 11680 kHz. At the end of the programme there is an
announcement in Russian and English giving the mailing address as KGEI,
Box 15, San Francisco, 94101 California, USA. (Rumen Pankov, Bulgaria)
KUSW in Salt Lake City has been noted in English with weak strength
at 17:00 hours on 15650 kHz with organ music and choir songs. (Peter

URUGUAY--SODRE, Servicio de Radiodifusion Oficial, has reactivated one
of the shortwave transmitters, CXA6, which can be heard 11:00-03:00
hours on 9620 kHz with a power of 300 Watts. SODRE can also be heard on
mediumwave 1050 and 1290 kHz. On Saturdays at 13:30 hours and on
Sundays at 02:00 hours there is a programme called Radioactividades

Radio El Espectador, usually disturbed by Radio Japan, has been
heard with advertisements and much talk with good strength around 21:35
