Shortwave and other electronic media news from Radio Sweden.

We begin with news of radio in the Gulf, not necessarily in alphabetical
order:
KUWAIT/IRAQ--Radio Baghdad's domestic general service in Arabic continues to
be heard on 540 kHz, a frequency which had carried transmissions supporting
the Emir of Kuwait. Since August 15th, Radio Baghdad's General Service has
been heard on another Radio Kuwait medium wave channel, 1134 kHz.
990 kHz, which had been carrying the pro-Iraqi Radio of the Provisional Free
Kuwait Government, is now broadcasting Radio Baghdad's Voice of the Masses
program in Arabic.
Holy Mecca Radio moved on August 19th from 9730 kHz to 9720. It continues to
broadcast talks and slogans hostile to Saudi Arabia and Western influence in
the Gulf. The schedule is believed to be 04:00-22:00 hrs.
Meanwhile, on the other side, Kuwaiti resisters have set up both a radio
station and a television station in Saudi Arabia. Saudi Television has made
room for regular Kuwaiti broadcasts. (BBC Monitoring, AFP, and Reuters)
USA--The US Air Force continues to fly personnel and equipment across the
Atlantic. 11176 and 13214 kHz are the strongest frequencies monitored here.
There's been a lot of activity on the CompuServe HamNet Forum about the
frequencies used by the US Military Airlift Command, or MAC. You might notice
that the planes identify as MAC, followed by three numbers and Sierra Mike or
Sierra Kilo.
The sites heard include Ascension Island; Incirlik, Turkey; Croughton,
England; and Saragoza, Spain.
The following frequencies are in use for the airlift to Saudi Arabia: 11176,
13244, 15015, 18848, 19219, 19272, and 19744 kHz. (John Pistritto,

It is possible to monitor voice traffic pertaining to the Middle East
operation from the American military satellite network, FLEETSATCOM. Saudi
Arabian personnel have also been granted access to the system, and they can
be heard as well. Most voice traffic is between 260 and 270 MHz in FM. It
helps to have a right-hand cirularly polarized antenna. (Tim Tyler,

According to Larry Van Horn's book "Communications Satellites", FLEETSATCOM
channels used by the US Navy start, in fact, at 252 MHz and continue to 270
MHz.
THE OZONE LAYER--There's much concern in the world today about the depletion
in the Earth's protective ozone layer, which shields us from ultraviolet rays
from the sun. Due to the release of chemicals known as CFCs and other
pollutants into the atmosphere, the ozone layer is breaking down, which is
causing an increase in skin cancer. The first sign of this breakdown has been
the discovery of annual "holes" in the ozone over the poles.
Now a plan is under way to send a powerful beam of radio waves into the upper
atmosphere to test methods of repairing the hole in the ozone layer.
Professor Alfred Wong of the University of California has proposed a trial
experiment using a high powered radio transmitter in Alaska. Some 1.2 MW of
power would be pumped into the sky, in an attempt to convert harmful chlorine
in the atmosphere into a more benign form. Hopefully the chlorine will turn
into negative ions, which are less likely to react with ozone. ("The Daily

AUSTRALIA--Radio Australia has started test transmissions to North Asia on
21825 kHz up to 10:00 hrs. (Peter Andrewitz, West Germany)
CZECHOSLAVAKIA--Updating SCDX-2107, Radio Prague is also broadcasting in
French at Europe at 19:30 hrs on 5930, 6055, 7345, and 11990 kHz. Updating
DX-Bulletin 2095, Radio Prague is broadcasting in German to Europe at 05:30
hrs and 12:00 hrs on 6055, 7345, and 9505 kHz; and at 14:45 hrs on these same
frequencies as well as 5930 kHz.
Radio Prague broadcasts in Spanish to Europe 17:30 hrs on 5930, 6055, 7345,
and 11990 kHz and at 19:00 hrs on 5930 and 11990 kHz. Spanish to the Americas
is at 02:00 hrs on 5930, 7345, 11680, and 11990 kHz; and at 23:00 hrs on

CUBA--Beginning Sept. 3, Radio Havana Cuba is broadcasting in Spanish at
18:00-20:00 hrs on 15350, 17710, and 21670 kHz; at 20:00-22:00 hrs on 11950
and 15220 kHz; and at 06:30-07:00 hrs on 15230 kHz. (Leopoldo Crisostomo,

GDR--Even before the East German parliament decided that Germany
reunification would take place on October 3rd, it was decided that East
Germany's own radio stations would cease their separate existance during that
month. On October 1st Berliner Rundfunk will stop broadcasting to the entire
GDR. Radio Aktull will close on October 15th. (BBC Monitoring)
INDIA--With the continuing crisis in Kashmir, broadcasts of Radio Kashmir
coming from All India Radio studios in New Delhi have been heard at 03:50-
04:05 hrs on 9630 kHz and at 07:00-07:30 hrs on 11850. Transmissions believed
to be at 13:00-16:30 and 14:00-14:25 hrs have not yet been confirmed by
monitoring observations. (BBC Monitoring)
JAPAN--Beginning September 2nd, Radio Japan is broadcasting to Europe in
English at 08:00 hrs on 21500 kHz from Japan and on 21690 kHz from Gabon, and
at 23:00 hrs from Gabon on 11835 kHz. There's a broadcast to the Middle East
from Gabon at 15:00 hrs on 21700 kHz.
English to North America will be from Canada at 01:00 hrs (02:00 hrs after
Oct. 29) on 5960 kHz and at 11:00 hrs (12:00 hrs from Oct. 28) on 6120 kHz.
English direct from Japan will be at 05:00 hrs on 17825 kHz and at 14:00,
17:00, and 19:00 hrs on 11865 kHz.
The morning service in Europe wil be from Japan on 21500 kHz and from Gabon
on 21690 kHz. This is for Russian at 05:00 hrs, Swedish at 05:30, Italian at
05:45, German at 06:00, and French at 06:30 hrs. The evening service to
Europe will be on 9540 kHz from Japan and on 21640 kHz from Gabon. This is
for German at 20:00 and French at 20:30 hrs. Swedish at 21:00 hrs will be on
9540 kHz.
Spanish to Latin America will be at 03:00 hrs on 15325 and 15350 kHz from
French Guiana, and on 17825 and 21610 kHz from Japan. There's another Latin
American transmission in Portuguese at 09:00 and Spanish at 09:30 hrs on
15390 kHz from Japan and 9675 kHz from French Guiana. (Radio Japan)
SOUTH KOREA--Radio Korea is now broadcasting in Russian at 17:30 hrs and in
French at 18:15 hrs to Europe on 9870 kHz. (Vadim Alexew, USSR)
NAMIBIA--The Namibia Broadcasting Corporation is broadcasting in English
04:30-05:30 hrs on 3270 and 3290 kHz and 05:30-06:00 hrs on 7165 and 7190
kHz. There are also broadcasts in English and local languages on 3290 kHz at

NEW ZEALAND--Updating DX-Bulletin 2104, Radio New Zealand is also
braodcasting weekdays at 07:15-10:30 hrs on 9855 kHz. This is heard fairly

NORWAY--Radio Norway International is doubling its English programming,
beginning September 3rd. From that date, Radio Norway will broadcast in
English on Saturdays as well as Sundays. (BBC Monitoring)
SPAIN--Spanish Foreign Radio is broadcasting in English: To Europe, the
Middle East and Africa at 19:00-20:00 hrs on 15395, 15375, 15280, and 11790
kHz; and at 21:00-22:00 hrs on 15280 kHz. To North America at 00:00-02:00 hrs
on 9630 and 11880 kHz, and at 05:00-06:00 hrs on 9630 kHz. (Andre Tatter,

SUDAN--Sudanese Radio has begun test transmissions, reactivating medium wave
1296 kHz. This is listed at 1500 kW in power. (BBC Monitoring)
TURKEY--The Voice of Turkey broadcasts from 20:00 to 21:00 hrs in English and
at 21:00 to 22:00 hrs in French on 9795 kHz. English is also broadcast at
22:00 hrs on 9445, 9685, 9665, and 17880 kHz; and at 03:00 hrs on 9445 kHz.

USA--An American radio station that was broadcasting from a ship in
international waters, says it is about to the return to the air. Radio New
York International was raided by the authorities while anchored off the coast
of New York. It will now return to the air on land, using the facilities of
WWCR in Nashville, Tennessee.
According to a news release, Radio New York International will broadcast on
Sundays, apparently Mondays UTC, at 01:00 to 05:00 hrs, on 7520 kHz. The
first broadcast is scheduled for September 16th, probably September 17th UTC.
