Shortwave and other electronic media news from Radio Sweden.

This week's bulletin was written by Ingemar Sandberg.

Electronic Edition edited by George Wood.

Packet Radio BID SCDX2110

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

SWEDEN--If you have access to EuroSport on cable or off the Astra or Eutelsat
I-F4 satellites, you can now find the entire Radio Sweden European schedule.
You'll need a television set equiped for Tele-Text, and you'll find our
schedule on Tele-Text page 496. That page actually consists of four pictures
that alternate, and you'll also find there the Radio Sweden European
schedules in Swedish, French, German, and Spanish.

Our medium wave transmitter on 1179 kHz is off the air for the time being.
We're waiting for spare parts to arrive.

HELSINKI SUMMIT--This Sunday Presidents George Bush and Mikhail Gorbachev
will meet in the Finnish capital Helsinki. We'll be covering the summit in
all of our Radio Sweden programs Sunday.

Our colleagues at Radio Finland will be providing even more coverage, a non-
stop service in English beginning at 04:00 hrs Friday and running until 22:00
hrs Monday. The service will feature live coverage of any summit events open
to the press, along with music interviews, and commentary. Between 21:00 and
03:00 hrs UTC taped recaps will be run, the rest of the programming will be
live.

The service will be round the clock on 103.7 MHz FM in Helsinki, and medium
wave 558 kHz. It will be carried on shortwave in regular scheduled Radio
Finland programs in English. And during the North American service at 12:00
to 15:00 hrs, these special English programs will replace Finnish and Swedish
as well. In fact, the head of Radio Finland, Juhani Niinistroe, tells us that
they may preempt any of the their regular frequencies in Finnish for this
special English service.

Some years ago Radio Finland stopped issuing QSL cards. But a special card in
honor of the summit will be provided in limited numbers.

SATELLITE-TV--Last week saw the launch of another Ariane rocket from French
Guiana. Two satellites have been carried into orbit. One is Skynet 4C, a
long-planned addition to the British Defence Minstry's satellite program.

The other satellite is the first in the new generation from Eutelsat,
Eutelsat II-F1, which is to be placed at 13 degrees East. That's the current
position of Eutelsat I-F4, which is to moved to 4 degrees East.

The new satellite has 16 channels in two beams. One is a wide beam to cover
all of Europe and the Canary Islands. The other is a high gain beam is
specifically for direct to home satellite broadcasters. Many channels
currently transmitting from other Eutelsat satellites are likely to move to
the new satellite, and there should be some new stations as well. British
Telecom has leased six transponders on Eutelsat II and promises at least
three will feature English-language programming.

Other channels likely to broadcast from the new satellite include Super
Channel, Galavision, Sat 1, and Nordic Channel. Eastern European countries
such as Romania and Poland have joined Eutelsat, which now serves 28
countries. ("What Satellite" and "Paa TV")

RAF IN THE GULF--We've reported on the US Air Forces frequencies used in
connection with the operation in the Middle East. Britain's Royal Air Force
can be heard on 11204 and 11234 kHz, in upper side band. (Hugh Stegman
CompuServe)

USA--We reported a couple of weeks ago how the Voice of America has increased
broadcasts in Arabic to the Gulf. Starting Wednesday this week the VOA will
be on the air 24 hours a day to the region. Arabic is increasing from just
under 10 to 13 hours a day. English programming to the MIddle East is
increasing to 21 hours a day.

The VOA is creating a Middle Eastern network, with the help of transmitters
loaned by Radio Free Europe. These transmitters, in Portugal, will be used
for VOA programs to Eastern Europe, freeing VOA transmitters in Germany and
Greece for the broadcasts to the Middle East.

Among the new transmissions, the special VOA Europe service is also being
relayed. Those signals, usually found only on satellite, FM, and medium wave,
will be at 03:00 to 03:30 hrs on 1260, 6095, 15160, 15225, 17810, and 17865
kHz. And 08:00 to 10:00 hrs on 11740, 15160, 15195, 21535, and 21615 kHz.

Iraq is jamming the Voice of America transmissions, just as it jammed Iran
during the Gulf War. (VOA)

BANGLADESH--Radio Bangladesh is now using 13615 and 11705 kHz for Arabic at
16:00-16:30 and Bengali at 16:30-18:00, both to the Middle East. (Alok
Dasgupta, India). There are many Bangladeshis stranded in Iraq and Kuwait.

CANARY ISLANDS--Radio Exterior de Espana is heard with programs from Santa
Cruz de Tenerife on 21555 kHz until 22:55. From 23:00 programs from Madrid
are relayed.. (Leo Jung, West Germany)

Nacional network: La Voz del Rio Arauca on 4895 kHz, La Voz de Guaviare en
San Jose de Guaviare on 6035 and Radio Cadena Nacional, Bogota on 6160 kHz
with 770 kHz in parallel.
