SWEDEN--So far the future of Sweden Calling DXers, and with it the printed
and Electronic editions of the SCDX bulletins is still uncertain. Many thanks

Radio Sweden is continuing to direct special broadcasts to Swedes in the Gulf
region, transmissions not listed in our new broadcast schedule. These are at
15:30 and 21:00 hrs, both on 11880 kHz.
In addition, the regular transmission on 21460 khz in the early morning hours
will be shifted to 145 degrees, to provide a better signal in the Middle
East.
You might recall that when Peter Wright's book "Spycatcher" was published a
few years ago, we read sections that concerned how British intelligence
worked with their Swedish counterparts, despite Sweden being a neutral
country.
Wright says, for example, that in 1959 he travelled to Stockholm to set up a
monitoring station for listening to communications from a Soviet naval
cruiser. He was aided by Sweden's National Defence Radio Institute, this
country's radio spies.
They're back in the news again after an article in the newspaper "Dagens
Nyheter" by former radio spy John Edin. He says that the Swedish military,
especially the Defence Radio Institute, has had close contact with NATO since
the 1940's. As an example he takes up the case of a Swedish air force DC-3
that disappeared over the Baltic in 1952. While officially on a training
mission, Edin says the plane actually was carrying sophisticated American
radio listening equipment.
The United States supplied the electronics, Edin says, and Sweden shared what
it uncovered. ("Dagens Nyheter")
SPACE--NASA was forced to scrub the launch of STS-35 on September 11th due to
the recurrence of a hydrogen leak in the aft engine compartment. Because
this leak appeared to be much worse than leaks previously encountered, NASA
will again roll the Columbia back to the "hanger" to perform repairs towards
a December 1, 1990 launch date. (UoSat bulletin)
Among the crew of STS-35 is radio amateur Ron Parise, who will be operating a
special station in space, concentrating on packet radio.
ALASKA--KNLS in Alaska is now broadcasting to Eastern China at 08:00-09:00
hrs on 7365 kHz, to the Far East at 15:00-16:00 and 18:00-19:00 hrs on 7355
kHz and at 20:00-21:00 hrs on 11700 kHz. (Dharam pal Panihar, India)
AUSTRALIA--Radio Australia's schedule in English to South Asia is as follows:
01:00-13:30 on 21775 kHz, 01:00-04:00 and 05:00-08:00 on 17630 kHz,
13:00-14:30 on 21525 kHz, 14:30-18:00 on 17630, 13745 and 9710 kHz,
18:00-21:00 on 9710 and 7240 kHz. (Tarun Sethi, India, Donny Irawan,

Other changes are the extension of 17630 and 17750 kHz from 09:00-10:00,
21775 kHz until 15:00; the addition of the new 9860 kHz at 13:00-14:00 and
15:30-18:00; the opening of 9710 kHz at 18:00 instead of 14:00, 17630 kHz at
13:00 instead of 15:00, and 13745 kHz at 15:30 instead of 14:30; and dropping
17630 kHz at 23:00-24:00 and 15240 kHz at 11:00-13:30. (Tom Sundstrom, USA

AUSTRIA--Radio Austria International's English service has moved from 07:30
to 05:30. 10:30 on weekends to Australia/New Zealand has been dropped. 16:30
to Africa moves to 17:30 with 12010 kHz replacing 21490 kHz, and 6155
replacing 11780 kHz. (Tom Sundstrom)
BRAZIL--The German broadcast of Radio National Do Brasil has moved from
19:00-20:00 to 19:30-20:45 on the same frequency of 15265 kHz. (Peter

Radio Nacional da Amazonia is now heard well in Europe on 15445 kHz in the

BURKINO FASO--Radiodiffusion-Television Burkina was heard with a very strong
signal on 4915 kHz at 22:00 in French. (Tom Sundstrom)
CANADA--RCI's "SWL Digest" is now to Africa on Sundays at 18:35 on 13670,
15260 and 17820 kHz; to Europe on Sundays at 21:35 on 17875 and 15325 kHz; to
the Caribbean on Sundays at 23:05 on 11730 and 9755 kHz; and to the USA on
Saturdays at 23:35 on 9755 and 5960 kHz. (RCI via John Sturman, England)
CUBA--Radio Havana was noted in early September on 9505 kHz (ex 9710 kHz) at
02:00 to North America with 11820 kHz in parallel. This new frequency is
co-channel with WYFR. Radio Havana disappeared from 11800 kHz at 19:00-21:00
early September, using 15435 kHz instead. (Tom Sundstrom)
GERMANY--This week East and West Germany become one country, with Deutsche
Welle as the sole external broadcaster. Radio Berlin International disappears
from the airwaves.
INDIA--The Urdu service of All India radio started using a new transmitter on
September 2nd (probably one of the two 500 kW built recently in Bangalore):
9610 kHz at 01:30-04.30 hrs, 11770 kHz at 08:30-11:30 and 6045 kHz at

IRAQ--Updating SCDX-2113, the "Voice of Peace from Bagdad", Iraq's broadcasts
in English to American soldiers in Saudi Arabia, are carried at 10:00-12:00
on 21675 kHz, 16:00-18:00 on 6055 and 11990 kHz and 20:00-22:00 on 21675 kHz.
The latter frequency is used by UAE in Dubai and by Radio Canada

Baghdad was heard in Spanish, French, German and English on 13660 kHz, still
announcing 11720 kHz for the French broadcast (Robert Chear, France) 11835
kHz is used by Bagdhad for its English transmission to North America and Asia

JAPAN--Updating SCDX-2096, NHK has changed its frequency for its Hindi and
Urdu broadcasts (16:30-17:00 and 17:00-17:30) from 15235 to 15210 kHz.

SOUTH KOREA--Radio Korea's schedule in English is: to Europe at 08:00 on 7555
and 13670 kHz, at 18:00 on 15575 kHz and at 20:30 on 6480 and 15575 kHz. To
North America at 12:15 on 9750 kHz and at 00:00 on 15575 kHz. To Africa at
11:00 on 15575 kHz, at 16:00 on 9870, and at 20:30 on 7550 kHz. To Asia at

NORTHERN MARIANA ISLANDS--Due to events in the Gulf, KHBI has replaced 11650
with 13720 kHz at 18:00 to the Middle East in English. (Tom Sundstrom, USA)
THAILAND--The new Radio Thailand broadcast in Thai for workers in Saudi
Arabia, Kuwait and the UAE is aired daily at 15:00-16:00 on 11905, 9655, 4830
and 927 kHz. (BBC Monitoring)
UAE--UAE Radio from Dubai has replaced 17865 kHz with 21675. The current
schedule to Europe is: 10:30 and 13:30 on 21675, 21605, 15435 and 15320 kHz;
and at 16:00 on 21675, 21605, 15400, 13675 and 11795 kHz. (Wojciech Zaremba)
USA--Updating SCDX-2097, WCSN broadcasts at 08:00-08:55 on 9840 kHz instead
of 11705 kHz and at the new time of 12:00-14:00 on 21780 kHz. (Wojciech
Zaremba, Poland). Due to events in the Gulf, WCSN dropped 11705 kHz at 10:00
and replaced it with 13595 kHz. (Tom Sundstrom)
USSR--Radio Yerevan broadcasts in French on weekdays at 20:50 on 9550, 9760,
15485 and 15500 kHz. On Sundays, the frequencies remain 15510, 17625 and
17680 kHz. (Robert Chear, France)
Members of the English Service here at Radio Sweden recently held a
programming conference onboard a ferry to Tallinn in Estonia, and we visited
Radio Tallinn while we where there. We heard that there was some kind of
pirate radio activity, which the Estonian authorities believed came from a
Soviet military base.
Now BBC Monitoring reports hearing a station in Russian calling itself Radio
Hope, or Radio Nadezhda, opposing the separtist movement in Estonia. The
station has been heard at 04:30 until 06:00, 10:30 until 12:00 and 16:30
until 18:00 hrs, on 747 kHz. They also announce a frequency in the 25 meter
band, but BBC Monitoring has yet to uncover that channel. Estonian television
quotes the Ministry of Communications as confirming that Radio Hope is
broadcasting from a military area, and that the Soviet Army has licenced the

VATICAN--Vatican Radio will increase the duration of its Ukrainian and
Lithuanian broacasts from 15 to 20 minutes. Lithuanian will be aired at 18:50
and 05:00 in the 41 and 49 metre bands and Ukrainian at 17:50 and 04:00 on
9755, 7365 and 7180 kHz. Other broadcasts to the USSR in other local
languages are likely to be affected by these changes. (BBC Monitoring
Service).
PUBLICATIONS--Beam Verlag has published a book in German about the evolution
of short wave receivers between 1965 and 1990. 63 receivers are presented

There's a brand new book out called "Monitoring the Iraq/Kuwait Conflict".
Written by Langley Pierce, this 25 page book includes details of military
communications, shipping frequencies, and broadcasting stations in the
