Subject: IRRS-SW maintenance

Due to a series of urgent maintenance interventions to our 7,125 kHz
transmitter, IRRS-Shortwave is ***temporarily*** off the air as of Monday
Nov. 29, 1993. Our engineers are at work in order to resume transmissions as
soon as possible. Our regular broadcasts on 7,125 kHz were discontinued
temporarily for a series of transmitter failures last week, which brought us
off the air during most of the scheduled times. Spare parts are due to
arrive by Friday Dec. 3, and every effort will be made in order to re-start
regular operations as of Sunday Dec. 5, 1993.

Investigations on the cause of the failures to our transmitter, revealed
that surges induced by the local electricity on the 380 Volt power lines
which feeds our station, caused severe damages the transmitter's power
supply modules, to the automatic tuning system, as well as to computer
peripherals used for transmitter monitoring and control. Surge suppressors
installed earlier this summer, were defeated by the spikes on the three
phase AC line, and exploded in flames.

As of Moday Nov. 29, at 22:30 UTC, however, most of such damages have been
successfully repaired, and our transmitter was brought into operation during
a series of short tests. For safety reasons, however, it has been decided to
wait for original manufacturers spare parts and new surge suppressors to
arrive and installed before regular operations are resumed. In the meantime,
we are considering taking legal action vs. the electricity company which
caused these damages, both in order to recover costs, damages, and assure a
more reliable power distribution in the future.

IRRS-Shortwave can be heard (when on air) MON-FRI between 6-9:15 UTC, and
12-21:15 UTC, and SAT-SUN between 06-22:30 UTC (wintertime) on 7,125 kHz.
For more information please contact our office in Milano, or stay tuned to
the next edition of our <Hello There> program.

And wish us good luck!
