Longing to trade your Palm and cell phone in for a single svelte
device? Jeff Carlson passes on the results of his tests of the
Handspring Treo 180, perhaps the most successful of these hybrid
devices. Also this week, Matt Neuburg returns to tell us about
Tinderbox, an innovative text snippet keeper from hypertext
pioneer Eastgate Systems. We also have our reader grade of
Mac OS X, and ask that you vote for TidBITS in the 4th Best

DESCRIPTION: MacAstronomica generates sky maps at any time, from anywhere on
Earth. The maps show all the planets and stars visible to the naked eye, as
well as some galaxies and nebulas, the Ecliptic, meteor showers and the
Milky Way. Constellations are drawn in their traditional form, and a table
lists the visible objects. MacAstronomica also features an Orrery that
simulates the solar system, a sundial/moon dial, an astrological birth chart
generator complete with an overview, and a lot more. The interface is very
elegant and easy to use. And finally, MacAstronomica lets you print
customized sky maps and birth charts. Enjoy!

Subject: [*] CatFinder 2.5.1 - Disk cataloger and file manager

CatFinder is a powerful disk management tool that catalogs your disks and
provides an intuitive Finder-like interface for browsing the catalogs.
Floppies, hard disks, CD ROMs, any disk can be cataloged. Once a disk is
cataloged you can quickly and easily browse it's contents without having the
disk mounted. CatFinder also offers powerful find and report features that
will help you find and organize your files. CatFinder is shareware and
requires a PowerPC Mac running MacOS 8.5 or later.

Version 2.5.1 adds a "container" feature that allows you to better organize
the catalogs you create. This version also corrects a problem displaying
the size of disks larger than 2GB.

CatFinder's home page is www.mindspring.com/~shdtree and the author can be

Subject: [*] Macaroni 1.0.3

Macaroni: Automated System Maintenance for Mac OS X

Why should you have to remember to clean up your Mac once a week, or
once a month? Shouldn't a computer be able to remember for you?

Macaroni is a tool which handles regular maintenance for Mac OS X's
Unix core. Normally these tasks run on a regular schedule, in the
middle of the night. However if you don't leave your Mac on all night,
they never run. Your Mac won't wake from sleep to handle this.

Macaroni remembers the schedule for you!

Macaroni solves this problem. If a scheduled maintenance task is not
run when it's normally scheduled, Macaroni automatically ensures that
it's run at the next opportunity, whenever the Mac is on.

Features:
* Automatically runs maintenance jobs
* Configurable: Add your own scheduled tasks
* Custom tasks can be scheduled as daily, weekly, monthly, or at
regular intervals (such as "every three days").
* Tracks maintenance history
* Displays results of latest maintenance run.

Macaroni is from Atomic Bird, at <http://www.atomicbird.com/>. Contact
info@atomicbird.com for more information.

Download:

Macaroni is shareware and may be used free for 35 days.

Home Page: <http://www.atomicbird.com/>
Email contact: info@atomicbird.com

New in this release:

Fixes problems affecting some Macs where the "Run Job Now" button
failed to work properly. Also fixes "no such file" errors affecting
some Macs, and a problem where the "history" window would sometimes not
display the full history.

System Requirements:

Any Mac with Mac OS X 10.1.2 or greater.

Subject: [*] SRGP-X 1.0b1 Abstract

This is SRGP-X 1.0b1. It is a port of the SRGP framework from the Mac
Toolbox to Carbon, so programs that use SRGP (Simple Raster Graphics
Protocol) can be compiled and run on Mac OS X. It requires Mac System
8.6 or later w/any version of CarbonLib, or any version of Mac OS X. It
also requires either Apple's developer tools or CodeWarrior Pro 6 or
later.

SRGP is a raster graphics library described in the book Computer
Graphics: Principles and Practice by James D. Foley, et al. (ISBN:
0201848406 for the second edition). There was also a Mac-specific SRGP
book in print at one time or another, Introduction to Computer Graphics
Macintosh Version Software of SRGP and SPHIGS Software by James D.
Foley, et al. (ISBN: 0201609568).

SRGP is mainly used to teach students about computer graphics, but for
the purpose of this submission it belongs in the Developer tree.

Subject: [*] Startup Doubler 2.7.2 - for faster startups!

Startup Doubler can make your Mac startup faster, closer to the maximum
speed allowed by the hardware. Startup Doubler's software acceleration
streamlines loading of Extensions, Control Panels, Startup Items and the
Finder to improve startup times.

Startup Doubler is most useful for pre-G4 Macs, where startup can be made
10% to 50% faster. Fast disks in new high-end Macs can't be accelerated
much, but depending on the details of your setup Startup Doubler may
still bring some improvement.

Version 2.7.2 fixes a Virtual Memory related startup freeze that affected
some Mac OS 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 systems.

Startup Doubler runs on Mac OS 7.0 through 9.2.2. You may download and
try Startup Doubler for 15 days, at no charge. If you decide to keep it,
please register your copy. A single license costs $20, site licenses are
also available. Upgrades are free to registered users.

Subject: [*] V&N Webster AB - foreign language learning

'Webster AB' is a dictionary module (simple-dictionary) for use with the
'Verbs & Nouns' and 'V&N Lookup' programs. You can download the latest
versions of 'Verbs & Nouns' and 'V&N Lookup' directly from the Info-Mac
archives (the Education/Language directory), or via links from this web
site site: <http://users.netmatters.co.uk/dandaforbes>.

'Webster AB' contains the first part (letters A and B) of "The 1913 Webster
Unabridged Dictionary".

The dictionary module itself is free, to use it you need the shareware
program 'Verbs & Nouns 2.5.8' or later (or 'V&N Lookup 1.4.7' or later)
which you can download from the same places as this module - the
unregistered versions of 'Verbs & Nouns' and 'V&N Lookup' have some
limitations.

Subject: [*] Verbs & Nouns 2.5.8 - foreign language learning

'Verbs & Nouns' is an application for practising inflection, translation
and pronunciation at the level of single words. Features include the
opportunity to do various inflection exercises, and translation exercises in
both directions; to record and play sound for single words; to do
exercises based on sound or pictures; and to play various word-games.

The program keeps a record of exercises, and identifies the words that
the student has difficulty with. Along with the program, you need a
module for the target language concerned. The program can also be used
as an authoring tool to write your own modules of inflected words for
any language. A built-in 'inflection-generator' simplifies the addition
of these words. A 'Find' feature allows the modules to be used as
bilingual dictionaries.

Ready-made modules are already available for certain languages. You can
visit:

<http://users.netmatters.co.uk/dandaforbes>

to get more information.

how can i use a connection script in the os x internet access settings?

i am a longtime user of compuserve which needs a connection
script to connect via modem and PPP. in the remote access of OS
9, this script could be defined in the PPP settings. in OS X, it
looks that it is not possible any more. it seems that only
standard access is supported or using terminal mode, but which
is horrible to work with.
