I wouldn't call it crude; it was frequently ingenious in fact. I did find
it ridiculously easy, though; I died exactly once, and at a point where I
knew I'd die but wanted to see the result. In other words, I played through
the entire game in two sessions, taking about an hour.

It was rated as Advanced or Expert, btw, which gives you an idea of what those
ratings were actually worth.

Start with things like Planetfall et al. The toughest, best ones are
Zork III, Deadline, and Spellbreaker (in that order IMO). Suspended is also
difficult, and considerably different from the rest. Also Starcross.
Everything else is a breeze. ;)

(I'd give more concrete recommendations, but I can't recall at the moment
which ones they chose to include in LTOI1)
