Um, if you mean where you ask for "filename.Z" as just "filename", the
decompression is done on the ftp server's machine, not yours - so yes,
it will work, albeit with more load on the server and more traffic on the
net. To the original poster: were you retrieving binary files, and if so
were you in binary mode (type "binary")?

You can retrieve and uncompress in one motion with

get advent.tar.Z "| uncompress > advent.tar"

and then untar the file, if you _do_ have uncompress on your machine, not
that this buys you much (or is especially relevant to the first point :).
