At the Fort Worden Kite Makers confernce I took a class from J R Tolman,
we made a bamboo framed kite from the ribs of a paper Umbrella that he
pick up at a store in Chinatown. Apparently J R made a deal for the torn
umbrellas and stripped the paper off and dismantled the kites.
