I was planning on buying an intermediate/advanced kite. I've narrowed my
options down to Dodd Gross' Jam Session or Tori Tako's Silencer. The
kite I'm looking for should be kind of an intermediate kite but also be
able to do axels and the like. Has anyone ever flown one of these
kites? Just looking for someone who could tell me which one would be
better. Thanks in advance.

Dear Terry,
I've had a chance to fly the Jam Session a fair amount, and watch
both a non-expert and Dodd fly the Jam Session. No one kite does it all-
but the Jam Session is extremely versatile and capable of very advanced
tricks. It slides as well as any kite I own, and does axles easily. It's
not as radical as my Box of Tricks- but is much more versatile. With the
supplied screens, it handles fairly high winds very well and yet can fly
well in fairly light winds (although it's clearly not an ultralight).
We've crashed it more times than I'd want to have recorded, and nothing
has broken.
The only thing I dislike (and I've told Dodd), is that the standoffs
project behind the sail- which has lead to *many* tangles when trying and
learning the tricks in Flight School III. To me, this is a flaw-
according to Dodd, the designer feels it's a feature, in that it helps
provide traction on groundwork. I watched Dodd fly it- he never seems to
tangle.
Watching a master fly the Jam Session shows that the kite can
basically do it all- the limits to what it can do will be my limits, not
the kites.
At this point, my wife and people who try to get in my car think I
have too many kites (I, of course, disagree)- so I haven't yet been
gifted with another kite. But I will own a Jam Session (the polyester
version) soon, and think it's a great choice. (I do hope the standoff
mountings are changed before that, or I become a better flyer first).
I can't make a comparison- but if I had to go out with one kite, I'd
take a Jam Session over any kite in my bag/trunk/back seat.
Frank (the other one, not nasty at all)

Note: I have no financial interest in djskites other than that I'm a very
satisfied customer, and a happy student of Dodd's Flight School.

I have flown the Jam Session and it's a very nice kite. It's radical but not
hard to fly at all. I haven't flown the silencer so I can't give you a
comparrison.

Now, this is just MHO..... I'm not a novice flyer, but I'm not really good
either.

I have both the Jam Session and the Silencer.

The Silencer flys very nice as low as 2 maybe 3 mph. It flys and handles nice.
It does stunts in 2 mph and reacts to commands. Yes, it does axels, etc. in
that wind range. The Silencer is not a UL.

The Jam Session flys very nice in 8 to 10 mph. In 5 mph it seems like a bull in
a China shop. (sorry dodd).

What are your average winds? When do you want to fly? For me, the Silencer is a
far better choice. I can fly the Silencer on very low wind days and in brisk
winds. The Jam Session is not an option on a normal breezy day here....

The Silencer does most tricks easier and better than the Jam Session (IMHO).
The Silencer is a very well balanced kite and reacts similar to the Airmaster
kites.

Tori Tako gets my vote, hands down.

I'm not trying to bad mouth the Jam Session because I have never flown it
however, when a master flies any kite, the flier has more to do with the
performance than the kite. A master flier can make almost any kite look
good. I hope to try out a Jam Session this upcoming weekend at the Great
Lakes Sport Kite Champs!! It sounds like a very good kite, if I like it I
may try to convice my fiance that it should be in our bag!! Terry one
suggestion, if you can, go to a competiton and hit the demo fields!, these
are there so you can try out alot of different kites that you may not know
about.

The Jam Session wins my vote. Better flight manners, trick-ability, meterials
and detail oriented assemblely.

...............well, in my experienced opinion: I have not flown the other
kite yet, but will soon. But I do have alot of time on alot of Jam
Sessions.

Sure a good flier can make most kites look good, but the point you seem to
miss is that the Jam was designed for EVERYONE!
I've seen time and time again, a new flier make the Jam look good!
It is the most durable and versitale advanced sport kite we could come up
with and the sales and reviews on a world wide level support this
statement.
Framed in .2300 Avia, the Jam is not a UL, but most fliers can fly it very
well in 3-4 (without braking china)

and as far as the high wind range is concerned..... The Tramontana Vented
is considered by alot of fliers to be the best High wind sport kite
available. Yesterday in winds from 20-35 I was flying both kites and both
handled the high end with no problem. I used an HQ Screen in addition to
the screens that come with the Jam.

We are very proud of the Jam Session. I agree with one thing Dick said and
that is to try it for yourself.

In my expert opinion, the Jam is the best package available which includes
many extras(screens, video,ect.....) at a low affordable price.

Come see me at the "Tramontana Action Tour Tent" at Wildwood NJ, Grand
Haven MI, and in Road Island later this summer, and forget what he says or
even what I and thousands of happy Jam Session owners World wide
SAY.............. try it for yourself!

For the money, you can't go wrong.

I thought the MYSL was the best kite on the planet!
This was told to us by another expert opinion!!

Again, I have to agree with the Dodd. This is the finest package I've ever
seen. Dodd's videos are excellent education. His flying guide is great; very
good explaination of many maneuvers. I asked Dodd for permission to repoduce
his guide for my school children and he sent me thirty copies of it. I love the
sleeve, it is the greatest thing I've ever had to put a kite into. This sleeve
zips across the top and down the front, it has a pouch for the wind screen and
lines. The construction of the kite is top shelf.

But....
The kite itself is not me... I don't fly it well and do not get the reward it
has to offer.

Go fly the kite. Go fly the Silencer. See which *you* perfer.

One universal trait of a kite flyer; they'll let you fly their kite..

Hi Dodd,

I think the JAM SESSION is a great kite for everyone. It does tricks
easily etc. but I was annoyed about the manual/video that comes with
the kite. As a beginner you'll read the manual/watch the video and
there are no descriptions of the tricks shown in the performance video
! :-(
So you must walk to your kite dealer and have to purchase your new
video 'Flight School III Tricks' if you're interested in flying all
those nice tricks! (by the way the new Flight School is great !!!)

I think the JAM SESSION package would be even better if the Flight
School video will be included in the future. The performance video is
only another way of advertising for the 4 kites shown there. I think
it would be a better way to offer the performance video to
interested people BEFORE they'll order one of these kites !!!

nice greetings from germany
