A new pretest for the `pax' utilities is now available as:

   http://www.iro.umontreal.ca/contrib/paxutils/paxutils-2.4h.tar.gz

This is alpha software. See `README' for list and report information.

Hi, people.

We now start to aim a real release. As discussed on the forum, the first
official `paxutils' will install neither of `cpio' nor `pax' by default.
The idea is to get some `tar' out to replace version 1.12, while not waiting
all the time it would take before we are fully confident in `cpio' and `pax'.

So, out of the box, with no special `configure' options, this pretest release
should configure, compile, check and install with no problems. This is
our main goal now. Once *this* gets stable, I'll release `paxutils' 2.5.

Nevertheless, some of you pretesters may be more audacious and courageous.
You might want to configure like this, say:

   ./configure --enable-cpio --enable-pax --enable-dale-code

The last option compiles in Dale Worley's contributed code for the
experimental `--per-file-compress' (-y) option. When it will be stable and
when the legalese will be clear with the FSF, I'll remove that `configure'
option and just make the code permanent in the distribution. I'm providing
it now so Dale (and maybe others :-) could help me debug and fine tune it.
